Tasting Notes: The Uccelliera Rosso di Montalcino presents a richly alluring and complex bouquet, opening with intense aromas of ripe red fruits such as dark cherry, dried strawberry, and blackberry, interwoven with notes of mentholated herbs, savory spices, licorice, and a subtle earthiness. The palate is full-bodied yet elegant, offering a silky texture and vibrant acidity that lifts the concentrated red and blue fruit flavors. Characterized by firm, well-integrated tannins and a chalky, persistent finish, this powerful Rosso punches well above its weight class, delivering a captivating and structured expression of Sangiovese that is often described as "next-level".
Estate History: The Uccelliera estate was founded in 1986 when winemaker Andrea Cortonesi purchased a small, almost ruined homestead and land from his friends and former employers at the neighboring Ciacci Piccolomini d'Aragona estate, where he had been the cellar master. Located in the warm, sought-after southeast corner of the Montalcino appellation in Castelnuovo dell'Abate, the vineyards benefit from stony, loose soil and a unique microclimate. Cortonesi, a man of the land from a farming family, dedicated himself full-time to his project in 1998, with his first vintage (1991) yielding a mere 500 bottles. The estate quickly gained a reputation for producing "cult" Brunello and Rosso di Montalcino, known for their powerful and rich expression of the local Sangiovese Grosso grape, all cultivated using sustainable agricultural practices and meticulous manual vineyard work.
