Tasting Notes: The Montepeloso A Quo is a blend predominantly of Montepulciano, Sangiovese and Cabernet Sauvignon, with smaller portions of Marselan and Alicante Bouschet. Meant for early drinking, this robust, rich, spicy red is a real crowd-pleaser. Aged for 12 months in barrique, it displays an opulence and elegance rarely found at this price point.
Estate History: Montepeloso is a prestigious winery located in the heart of the Maremma region in Tuscany, Italy. The winery was founded by Fabio Chiarelotto, who left a successful career in academia as a historian to pursue his passion for winemaking back in his native region of Tuscany. The estate encompasses about 15 hectares of vineyards, situated on the gentle hillsides of Suvereto overlooking the Tyrrhenian Sea.
The philosophy of Montepeloso revolves around producing wines that express the unique terroir of Maremma while emphasizing balance, elegance, and complexity. The vineyards are planted with a variety of grape varieties, including Sangiovese, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and other indigenous and international varieties. To fully harness the potential of the terroir, he revamped the vineyards in 1997, implementing changes such as retraining, pruning, and even regrafting numerous vines. In the winery, he opts for relatively brief macerations, utilizes natural yeasts for fermentation, and bottles without filtration.
Montepeloso wines have garnered critical acclaim for their exceptional quality and distinctiveness, earning praise from wine critics and enthusiasts alike. The combination of meticulous vineyard management, low yields, and careful winemaking practices contributes to the outstanding reputation of Montepeloso.
