Tasting Notes: The Il Caggio "Ipsus" Chianti Classico Gran Selezione offers a complex and elegant profile, with inviting aromas of wild cherry, blood orange peel, hibiscus, violets, and subtle notes of sandalwood and graphite. On the palate, it is full-bodied yet refined, showcasing a core of vibrant red fruit and citrus character framed by very fine, polished tannins that provide a creamy, seamless texture. This intensely fruity and poised wine maintains remarkable freshness and elegance, culminating in a long, savory, and minerally finish.
Estate History: The Il Caggio estate is part of the extensive legacy of the noble Mazzei family, who have been dedicated to winemaking in the Chianti Classico region since 1435. The specific Il Caggio property, located in Castellina in Chianti, was acquired by the Mazzei family in 2006. At the time, the land was primarily used for selling grapes, but the family recognized the unique potential of a specific 6.5-hectare single-vineyard plot within the property to produce a distinctive, highly perfumed Sangiovese. This special project led to the creation of the limited-production "Ipsus" label, with its debut vintage released in 2015, quickly establishing itself as a top-tier expression of Chianti Classico.
