The Montalcino region is located south of Siena where a particular clone of Sangiovese, called Sangiovese Grosso, thrives. Production of wines from Montalcino dates back to the 14th century but it wasn’t until the Biondi-Santi estate began vinified Sangiovese separately in the 1870’s that the story of Brunello began.
Ferruccio Biondi-Santi was a soldier in Garibaldi’s army and upon returning home he took over management of the Fattoria del Greppo estate from his grandfather, Clemente. Ferruccio aged his pure Sangiovese wines in wooden barrels for up to a decade. Brunello gained a great reputation by the end of World War II and by the 1960’s almost a dozen producers were making the wine. In 1980 it gained DOCG status and today over 200 wineries are producing this incredible wine, a window into the soul and spirit of Toscana! Save 20% through November 9th, 2025 on all wines from Montalcino!
