Tasting Notes: The Montepulciano is fermented for about 10-12 days and subsequently aged for 24 months in glass-lined cement, which Pepe prefers over oak. The wines are bottled with no sulfur and laid down to rest for several years in the cellar. As they age in bottle the wines undergo malolactic fermentation naturally. Before being released the bottles are opened and decanted one by one by hand into new bottles after which they are re-corked with the year of bottling on the cork, labeled and shipped. The 2003 is wild vintage for Pepe, with an earthy, gamey profile and notes of licorice, leather and evolved, stewed fruits.
Estate History: Emidio Pepe started his estate in Torano Nuovo, Abruzzo in 1964 after learning from his father and grandfather, who both produced wines since 1889. Emidio saw untapped potential for both Montepulciano and Trebbiano grape types and began work to bring them to their full potential. Pepe's approach to winemaking is perhaps the most singular in the business. Eveything is done meticulously by hand including the crushing of the grapes and even the bottling of the wines! Now, 50 years later, this estate is still run by Emidio with the help of the entire family and continues to be the benchmark for quality in Abruzzo.
