Estate History: Cascina Val Del Prete is a leading grower in Roero, recognized for a commitment to natural farming and for traditional work in the cellar, utilizing techniques such as long maceration. This type of farming and cellar work requires incredible commitment, but the resulting wines achieve another level of detail and age-worthiness that is quite simply lost or minimized with more modern techniques that tend to rush processes along. 20 to 30 years ago the family was chastised by their neighbors for their painstaking approach - today, some of the most respected names in Piedmont and of the "terroir driven," wine scene speak highly of their work.
Initially producing far more than grapes, Bartolomeo and Carolina planted Barbera and Nebbiolo on the hillside amphitheater (from their label), beginning to realize the historically understood importance of the land. Mario and Maria Carla took over in 1995 with the goal to keep all grapes for estate bottling and to dedicate themselves to growing fine wine in a natural manner. Giovanni explained how his Father used to be routinely chastised for not only being a farmer (it was very out of fashion after World War II), but for farming naturally when chemicals made the work so much easier. The estate has been certified organic since 2013 and practices Biodynamic techniques.
