Tasting Notes: The Marco de Bartoli Marsala Vigna La Miccia 5 Anni, first produced in 1985, is an innovative semi-dry expressive take on Marsala wine. It retains the richness of Marsala but in a more elegant and subtle version. The most fruity and delicate notes of the  Grillo grape have been preserved thanks to cold vinification and avoiding any contact with oxigen during the aging period. Pair with soft or blue cheese, pumpkin ravoli or try with shrimp scampi. Works great with desserts as well.

Estate History: Marco de Bartoli, after a career as a race car driver, decided to reconstruct his family’s old cellar on his mother’s farm in Samperi, Sicily. The goal was to reinvigorate Marsala wine, which had fallen from the elegant, sipping wine that was an equal to fine sherry in the 1900’s, to a cooking wine. He was able to source old solera barrels of the traditional Grillo wine used to make both a ‘Vecchio Samperi’ or unfortified Marsala and a ‘Superiore’ line that was fortified with ‘mistella’ sweet must and eau de vie. These two Marsala speak to the past and the future of Marsala. Marco has since expanded into producing Passito wines on the Island of Pantelleria and dry red and white wines, all organic and using indigenous yeasts and with little to no additives or chemicals in the vineyards.
